Greymouth to Franz Josef Glacier
All these photos have been taken on route to Franz Josef and do not really show just how beautiful this area is.
Our journey this morning took us along the coast road for quite a way. This showed us sea and valley and lots of lagoons and lakes. Again we were blessed with good weather and half way along we stopped at Purekura for a coffee break. This was again a little row of houses and a few shops, but the cafe was great. It was also up for sale, very tempting and a lovely retirement job in a beautiful location. Alas we have to give it a miss! We travelled on and found ourselves on an inland route going through bush and forest. It was so twisting that we have taken a video (well I did as David was driving) as we went along showing just how tight some of the bends were. We gradually approached vast areas of rivers and lakes all from the snow melt. These waters were crystal blue and looked very cold. We did not stop to find out..
Finally we arrived at the Franz Josef Glacier and this time we had all afternoon to explore the area. Firstly and most importantly David booked his dream helicopter trip for tomorrow, a thing that he has always wanted to do. I'm afraid that I ducked that one. I shall just sit in the cafe and watch him take off. We found this little town very active, with lots of walkers and climbers. Its a big skiing area for the NZ in the winter months and there was still plenty of snow showing on the tops of the mountains.
We had lunch and sat and relaxed and did some people watching then walked back to our campsite which again is very good and situated in an area surrounded by mountains. Unfortunately David's hay fever is really bad at the moment because of all the greenery but hopefully it won't affect his flight. At the moment it is raining but all around is clear sky...We should have some very good photos tomorrow weather permitting.
By the way, we are amongst many brits (mostly old farts like us) they must be on good pensions!!!
