Nelson to Greymouth

We started off fairly early as we had quite a lot of motoring to do.  There are not many main roads on the South Island and you have to skirt around mountains and lakes..We stopped off at a place called the Red Barn which was about an hour and half into our journey.  We certainly had taken the scenic route, the mountains and gorges were not in view as we had rain to drive through.  (making a change) and once we had cleared the first lot of ranges Lokout Ranges, Hope Ranges forests and valley.  Once we had our break just outside of Murchison, where we saw peacock and parrot, amongst alpacas and deer on a little farm pull in (Red Barn) the weather changed dramatically and we went into the very fine weather ago. This made the mountains and gorges look much more attractive.  We motored on until we came to Westport, fortunately we arrived after their marathon race (not an easy looking course with more ups than downs)  This is a little port town on the west coast.  We found a little cafe and had a pie and some ice cream and then motored through to Greymouth.  What a picturesque journey this was.  As well as being in the sunshine we passed through gorges and along lovely rivers, each bend giving a different view.  The coastline here is very dramatic with coves and rock formations.  We could have stopped at so many, but time is so limiting.  The campsite we are staying at is larger than we have been in before and at the moment has lots of noisy bikers, but we are on the coast so the beauty of the place makes up for it.  We are here two days and probably will take a long walk along the coast if the weather stays fine.  What a way to live..
